Gotham Journal 2
A few weeks passed and I was still no closer to making any meaningful connections at school. There WAS this one kid that seemed just as lost as me. His name was Dick. Supposedly he was a professional gymnast or something. For a while kids would tease him and call him a carny. This one jock went as far as to nickname him the Air-Ballerina. I considered introducing myself, then at least we wouldnt be completely alone, but when HE attempted to approach Me one day I just slinked into the bathroom and locked myself in a stall . It may sound stupid, considering my situation, but in the end i figured that the association wouldn’t help my standing any. That was up until the point everyone got wind that his parents died in some tragic big-top accident. The kid had no problem making friends after that. To top it off, I found out he got adopted by some rich guy. Figures. Since I had no pity card to play I went on walking down the locker lined halls alone in my usual haze. Boy did I regret not just manning-up and doing the right thing from the start, then I would have been grandfathered right into friends. Guess karma’s a bitch.
Things at home weren’t much better. After the first few weeks my father started to notice that the reward didn’t really fit the effort he put in at work. The promised luster wasn’t just beneath the grit and grime. As a matter of fact, it was quite the opposite. His boss, Commissioner Loeb, seemed to drop the hammer daily on the few cops who weren’t in on his corrupt mission statement. It was no secret that he was just a mobster with a badge, but in a city like that it was futile to say anything. “It’d be quicker to just put a razor to your wrist”, Dad would say, yet he still went in day after day like a beaten girlfriend and came home more defeated each time. My mother saw less and less of him. She began to resent his friend Gordon for putting this idea of changing Gotham in his head and turning our lives upside down. She became more and more depressed each day, as did I. It didn’t seem like it could get any worse. That’s when rumors of a bat monster with a thirst for crooked cop blood began to circulate. Loeb became more erratic and focused all his paranoia and frustrations on the few officers he thought might be involved…

Gotham Journal
My parents moved us to this city when I was still a junior in high school. What a crappy time to uproot a kid. They couldn’t have waited another two years until I was ready to go away to college? I was too old to easily transition into a new teenage social scene (it was just too late in the game; especially in a place like that) and too young to shrug off the isolation. I mean, it wasn’t like I was homecoming king at my last school, but I was comfortable where I fit in and had a great group of weirdos to call friends. Not that I wanted to, but if I had to choose a place I would’ve went with Opal; my best friend Marco went there on a band trip and said the art scene was really sweet, totally retro and the buildings had this whole early-century/art deco thing going for them. Even Metropolis, in it’s shiny futuristic glory, would have took the edge off the move, but not Gotham. Anything but Gotham. Gotham WAS the edge; the rusty, jagged edge.
I remember the drive in being an ominous indicator of things to come. Half-way over the Trigate bridge the smog digested our car like the London fog. Compared to this, NEW YORK was subtle. We must have heard at least ten separate gunshots from the river to our new apartment. “That’s why we’re here!”, my Dad said…every single time.
Now, I know that may be confusing. Let me be more clear. We didn’t leave the rural outskirts of Keystone to trade in crowing roosters for a 9mm wake up call every morning, my father was offered a job by an old pal in the force. Before he met my mom he trained in Chicago. His roommate was a guy named Gordon. Joe or John or Jim or something. At any rate, this guy called my Dad up and said he felt that they could both do some real good there…in Gotham. Now I know he just meant he couldn’t do it alone. The place would have spit a good man out like a bad pistachio. At least that’s the way good-ole Pops put it. I wouldn’t know, I’m allergic to nuts. But as we would soon find out, Gotham was anything but…

Man Of Steel Set Pics
Here are some set photos from Zack Snyder’s much anticipated Man Of Steel movie. There is what looks to be the Kent farm house, possibly a Smallville school, some examples of destruction, and two of Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) himself.
The Comic World is Buzzing about The New 52
Now that there is a mere month left of the summer blockbuster comic event FLASHPOINT, and we grow that much closer to the groundbreaking NEWniverse (I should coin that), I’ve grown more comfortable with the change and would like to briefly share some of my thoughts. As you know, the DC relaunch kicks off at the end of August with Justice League #1 written by superstar comic scribe Geoff Johns (Green Lantern) and amazing artist and DC co-publisher Jim Lee (Batman:Hush). If you frequent our site or picked up the free “DC COMICS: The New 52″ preview book at your local shop, you have already seen the six page sneak preview of JL #1. The events take place five years before present day as a threat unfolds that will require the worlds greatest (but disparate) heroes to band together. The part I most appreciated was at the end when Hal Jordan remarked with surprise to Batman “You’re Real?”, which lends the Caped Crusader the dark myth status that fits his character so well. How can I not be excited with such a phenomenal creative duo helming the most powerful superhero team of all time?
Some of you might notice the lack of Martian Manhunter in the promo pictures. He has been replaced by Cyborg, who plays an integral part in FLASHPOINT. But fear not, friends, J’onn J’onzz will be a driving force in STORMWATCH, a “dangerous super human organization whose existence is kept secret from the world”. This comic appears to be the bridge between DC and it’s dead subsidiary company WILDSTORM for it’s defunct characters Apollo and Midnighter.
Other promising team books to look out for are Justice League International, Green Lantern Corps, GL: New Guardians, Red Lanterns, Justice League Dark, Suicide Squad, Teen Titans, Legion Lost, Legion Of Super-Heroes, Birds Of Prey and Batman And Robin.
Books to look out for are Action Comics #1 (which is said to be the cornerstone of the new DCU), Aquaman (also written by Geoff Johns, and featuring a new threat of creatures called The Trench…if anyone can make “fishboy” an exciting/worthwhile read it’s this guy), almost all the Bat-books (Nightwing’s in his tight spandex again, Batwoman looks dark and eerie, Catwoman’s written by Judd Winick, and, wait for it…Barbara Gordon is back under the Batgirl cowl!), Red Hood And The Outlaws (I called an Arsenal and Red Hood team-up book years ago. Wish I could take credit), Swamp Thing (Alec Holland is back as our green buddy, plus Snyder and Paquette are great) and All-Star Western (A Jonah Hex team-up with Amadeus Arkham in a 19th century Gotham is forcing my hand to buy this book). How was that for a run-on sentence?
Some things I don’t dig: Red Robin’s new costume; did he get it cheap on the reservation? Hey, Tim, Black Condor wants his outfit back and he’s pissed you left it in the warm wash with your reds. His outfit was one of the cooler ones. Why do they always break what’s fixed? (Oh, no he didn’t!).
Another is the survival of Batman Incorporated from one ‘verse to another. Unless it’s going to be a shadowy organization that only the supers know about, leave it out. The whole public/Tony Stark sort of thing…nope.
Is Batwing really necessary?
And, for all you Ted Kordians out there, looks like Jaime still has the scarab…sorry.
Some things I do dig: Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad and Sinestro as a Green Lantern again (now I understand why the Red Lanterns will be the main bad guys in the GL Animated Series…at least in the beginning).
Love it or hate it, you have to admit that this is one of the most talked about comic events in recent decades. In my personal opinion it at least registers as the most bold and exciting move either of the industries “Big 2″ have made in the 21st century. Hopefully they don’t drop the ball. Well, that’s my piece for now. Hope it piqued the interest of some casual readers and Marvel fans. Sorry for my long hiatus. I hope to be back for good to my throne as DC guy soon. Until next time.

P.S. I should have added the fact that I’ll probably be buying almost every book to my list of things I don’t dig.
