I really don’t know if I’m getting old, or the youth of today just don’t know about video games. I was over at Gamespot .com and these kids are all mixed up. A new trailer was posted for a Samurai Showdown game. It looks terrible. But some one said the characters look like Anime and Soul Calibur rip offs. Samurai Showdown came WAY before Soul Calibur. Any way that led me thinking that some one needs to talk about why us Old School guys rave about games newer gamers just don’t know why.

Every time Final Fantasy is brought up, it’s always Final Fantasy VII. It’s as if no other came before it and there was nothing after it. Now don’t get me wrong. We all have our own opinions. BUT. Let’s be reasonable. All of us. And we know who we are, that still have our original copy of FF VII. My first daughter is eleven and I bought it a month before she was born. I still own my original copy. There have been a few titles after that great FF VII. You have to take the Final Fantasy series as stand alone novels. I say this because, yes it’s the same title with an extended numerical value. But each game is a story of itself. There has only been one true sequel. Final Fantasy X-2. Every other game has had it’s own story, rules and characters. Each of these games were good or bad for whatever reason we may believe. They had no connection to one another; besides the character Cid who was familiar in name only. And Chocobo’s. These cool giant birds. Mostly used for riding.

GameTrailer.com did retrospectives on the Final Fantasy series that are very good. And they are done artfully without much personal criticism. I’m going to post a few. It’ll only be the ones that were truly cool to me. Well more than a few. After you’ve seen these retrospectives, you’ll begin to understand what it is about these games that are so appealing. Final Fantasy VII was and still is awesome. But it wasn’t the beginning and it sure isn’t be the end. I’m looking for a remake of FF VII along with the rest of the fans. And I’m also wondering will SquareEnix make another CG film about other Final Fantasy games. Well I guess only time will tell.

ff-viFinal fantasy VI: This was my first FF game. I bought from the Wiz for the Super Nintendo. I had no idea what I was about to get into. Needless to say. The game had been daunting. I never thought a person could play a game that long. I fell in love with the premise of playing through a game that was akin to a hundred Dungeon and Dragons episodes. With a large number of characters at your command, and all of them with different special abilities. It made for a great play through. Worth every penny I paid. Bought it again when it was released for the ps1.

final-fantasy-vii-coverFinal Fantasy VII: Yes it is one of the best RBG’s of all time. Cloud, Tifa and the rest of the gang will forever be embedded in our minds. With the best villain Sephiroth. Materia. And one of the longest side quest ever (Chocobo Racing). We can all agree that if you own a PS3, you most likely downloaded FF VII. I got just because it plays better off the hard drive. And yes I’m playing it now. The first Final Fantasy for the PS1. it gas a complex story that lead to the FFVII compilation. And the Final Fantasy: Advent Children movie.

final-fantasy-viii-disc1of4-u-frontffixboxFinal Fantasy 8 and 9: I truly enjoyed these two games. Although many of my friends either didn’t like them. Or just didn’t finish them. Shame on you all. FF VIII has more of a sci fi based story. The leveling up system took some time to adjust to. But in the end proved that you could push the sheer power of the characters over the top. My favorite character was Zell. He’s the mascot of the team. Fighting hand to hand, similar to FF VII’s Tifa. But he becomes quite the power house. A cool love story, and a card game that allowed you to get items that would enable you to defeat the toughest hidden bosses. FF IX brought me back to the old days of Dungeons and Dragons. Every character had their own job class. The leveling up system was a breeze. And the team was a hodgepodge of the various races in the game. The story was great. Should definitely be one of the next Final Fantasy movies. People will eat it up like Lord of the Rings.FF IX also had a card game. This one was much more difficult to follow than FF VIII. And didn’t reap the previous games spoils. But played a part in the story it self. I played over 60 hours on both ,FF VIII and FF IX each.

ff-xFinal Fantasy X: This is my favorite Final Fantasy. The first of the series to appear on the PS2. Tidus and Yuna’s journey is one for the story books. Every character was unique and stood out. My oldest daughter loves it. There is nothong that bothered me about this game. Even Tidus’s whinny voice. Awesome graphics. A leveling system that let you expand the skills of each character to your preference. A lovely soundtrack. And a fighting system that allowed you to switch party members during battle. Final Fantasy X is a joy to play when there is nothing left to play. I put in over 86 hours into FF X. And I did it more than four times. It’s the BEST!!
Didn’t care too much for final Fantasy X-2. Cool, but a little Too girlie for me.

FFIII (US) was the best final fantasy ever. The story was the best, the magic system the best and the characters some of the most memorable.

FFVII was great, but in all honesty the story was confusing, convoluted and not complete. Still it had a cool premise and the game was alot of fun.

(And yes i own every original final fantasy and many other legendary RPGS on PS1 and the PS2)

technically there are two sequels, you forgot FF IV: The After Years
no comments for anything prior to VI? I just beat III, IV and VI recently and I’m playing FF IV: TAY on the Wii.
X being the favorite though? I know we’re all entitled to our opinions(personally my fav is FF VIII but I know I’m biased since that was my first), I can understand X feeling rich, but that game was a bore(imo) that took me several years to finally beat.
IX was really fun at the time, kind of like V.. but it had some weak limit breaks and characters.
Never bothered with FF XII though I am somewhat into FF X-2 and I don’t entirely hate it. Once I cheated and mastered the alchemist the game lost all challenge and I gave up somewhere during the desert mission.

so here’s my scale.. I think
    viii > vii > vi > iii > ix > v > x > iv

  • Final Fantasy VI was also the first one I played. You forgot FF XII, which is one of the best in the series.

wow dude, play X-2, doesn’t matter if it’s “too girlie” the combat system in that game was probably one of the better upgrades to the series bringing back the ATB and classes. You are made of FAIL if you did not play this game.

Final Fantasy 7 Sorta did get a sequel. And FFXII if you consider revenant wings.

Final Fantasy 7 was my first RPG game, I played it when I was 6 and loved it. But I also love all the other FF games as well, with the Exception of Final Fantasy XII. But I don’t have any favorite FF game, they’re all just amazing to me.

Also I think you mean Samurai Shodown. I remember playing that game too when I was a young kid.

I agree, and would add IV to the mix. That was the first FF I ever played, and though the story is simpler than VII’s, I still find it to be one of the best in the saga.

I have played many FF games, and even though I understand why people like the 7th so much (and i do to), my best fav still are FF8 and FF6. 6 because it had SO MANY characters and the thing where they separate and join again was like awesome. and 8 because the story and the cast is just so real. it’s a scifi based world but the characters struggle are real. it’s not about the guy with no fear who jumps into battle. that’s why it’s my ultimate best.

btw, er, FFXII is NOT the best one in the series. it is actually one of the worst not because of the battle system (as many people say thats why, those are just haters), but because of the characters that are really unrelatable and the star wars analogy that is thrown in your face. i have not yet met someone who played previous FF and said 12th is the best. sure every one is entitled to their own opinion, but the 12th really was
    bad seriously.

so yeah so happy to read about other gamers from back in the days :]

FFVII means more to me than any other game, it was the first RPG I ever play and now it’s my favorite genre of games so that says a lot right there. Since then I have played almost all of the games in the series an have enjoyed every one. Each game was unique and most importantly brought something new to the table. Also FF Tactics was a genre opening game for me as well, Like RPG’s I really didn’t have an interest in strategy games but now I even play straight from japan games that I can’t completely understand Like Super Robot Wars, I still blame my little cousin for that.
