Dark Horse And Toshiba Present New Digital Hellboy Comics Exclusively For USA TODAY
It’s time for all of us who miss Mignola on full Hellboy duty to rejoice. This week a five story series of USA TODA
Y-exclusive online comics presented by Dark Horse and Toshiba, kicks off. The DH:HD program we heard about at the NYCC starts with Hellboy: The Whittier Legacy. Mike Mignola talked to USA TODAY about how he didn’t realize how much he missed having full responsibility of the character. The Hellboy creator talked about the balance of keeping the character accessible to a whole new audience, while still giving diehard fans a story they would really appreciate. I kind of find this akin to when Bob Kane moved to national syndication with his dailies from 1943 to 1946. Mignola goes on to mention how his love of H.P. Lovecraft has always played a role in shaping his comic’s world (hmm…ya think?), but this new project will be a direct tribute to the legendary horror scribe. In other news, not without it’s own forboding tinge, Mignola explained to USA TODAY that, ”In the next year, we’re going to do some really exciting things. Hellboy is going to be able to step away from the baggage he’s been carrying around for all these years. It’s a pretty big ending”, also noting “We’re going to blow stuff up that we won’t be able or willing to fix. We’re going to change everything.” Wow. By all means, waste no more time! The scoop on Sin City 2 and Hard Boiled.
Producer Stephen L’Heureux recently talked to Comics2Film about Sin City 2 and Hard Boiled. L’Heureux said that the Sin City sequel will go into production towards the end of 2010, and will be based on a script by Frank Miller, who will co-direct again with Robert Rodriguez. The producer also spoke of a screenplay Miller is working on for him and Geof Darrow’s ‘Hard Boiled’. The comic centers around an insurance investigator who becomes a cyborg assassin. He said that they are also in talks for Sin City 3. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Frank. After The Spirit, aka Sin City remix, we should take some time to cool our heels and reassess some things.
It seems quite a few people online are wondering if this will effect the Wolverine sequel, which is said to be chiefly inspired by the works of Miller and Claremont, and the follow up to 300. 600? Calm down everyone, the book isn’t written yet, we can wait on that! Although, like everyone else, I wouldn’t mind seeing Ronin brought to life sometime soon–cue the CGI.
I think that as long as Robert Rodriguez takes control, and Miller sticks to concepts and creative consulting, Sin City should shape up just fine. Let the finger crossing commence!
