Dark Horse Comics:Steve Niles/Menton3 Nosferatu Wars

Dark Horse Comics all rights reserved:

Today, Dark Horse is proud to announce that this new vampiric tale will premiere in Dark Horse Presents!

The Black Plague was a time of death and misery . . . except for the undead. For vampires, the Black Death was a welcome relief from being hunted and a time of incredible growth for the undead. On the night of their wedding, two vampire lovers are torn apart and separated for five hundred years, setting off a sequence of events that will bring the modern world to its knees!

“I haven’t been this excited about working on something in a long time. Menton3 is the perfect artist and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be doing this at Dark Horse,” Niles said. “This year I’m making a big push to become 100 percent creator owned. Nosferatu Wars will be a big part of that, I hope.”

Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith redefined the vampire genre with the groundbreaking comic series 30 Days of Night in 2002. Ten years later, Niles is poised to make history again, as he and Menton3 blow the sparkle off of the undead in Nosferatu Wars, premiering in Dark Horse Presents later this year!

Avatar: The Last Airbender- The Promise Pt. I

Avatar The Last Airbender The Promise Pt. I Cover Avatar: The Last Airbender The Promise Pt. I

If you can’t wait for Nickelodeon to start showing ‘The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra’ or just can’t get enough of the original. Then Dark Horse’s ‘Avatar The Last Airbender- The Promise Pt. I’ the first in a new series of graphic novels is the answer. The good people over at Dark Horse was kind enough to give me an advance copy ahead of its January release.

The art style of Gurihiru fits perfectly into the world of The Last Airbender, along with Gene Luen Yang story I found myself forgetting this was a book and not the Nickelodeon cartoon. This book required two things; make you feel like your sitting in front that television screen again and do what it did so will, make you desperate to see the next episode. And on both counts it did not disappoint.

If I have one complaint, it’s that I have to wait until January 25th for Part 1. Now I think I’m going to find myself those ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ DVD’s to hold me over.

Official Synopsis:

“The wait is over! Ever since the conclusion of Avatar: The Last Airbender, its millions of fans have been hungry for more–and it’s finally here!

This series of digests rejoins Aang and friends for exciting new adventures, beginning with a faceoff against the Fire Nation that threatens to throw the world into another war, testing all of Aang’s powers and ingenuity!

* The continuation of Airbender and the link to its upcoming sequel, Legend of Korra!

* Written by Gene Luen Yang, author of the National Book Award-nominated American Born Chinese. ”

DC Comic List And Picks For Wednesday 12/08/10 (And Some B.P.R.D.)

Hey all.  Only a few weeks before Christmas!  Here are some ideas for the person in your life that wishes they could get to the shop more, but just can’t find the time (or a mere respite from your busy work week).  I am picking up Batgirl#16, DCU Holiday Special 2010(‘Tis the season!), Detective Comics Annual#12(This starts a story that will follow over into the Batman Annual), First Wave#5, Flash#7(Flashpoint is racing up on us), Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors#5, Justice League: Generation Lost#15, Red Robin#18(I’m guessing it’s gonna be good), Planetary: Spacetime Archaeology(This collection is some of my favorite modern comic storytelling next to the Mignola-verse–which is really saying something), and B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth: New World#5(The Mignola-verse…need I say more?!).  As Neo would say, I am a DC (boy am I), but Hellboy’s world is the most fully realized and untarnished world out there.  No reality/continuity altering crisis events to worry about here!  Let Hellboy, Abe, Liz, Kate, Johann, the fairies, the frogs and the Ogdru Hem help you  get rid of your headache.  Get into it icon smile DC Comic List And Picks For Wednesday 12/08/10 (And Some B.P.R.D.) !

    DC List For Wednesday 10/27/10

Shooting over to my local comic shop (Bailey’s) during my break between shifts has become my tradition.  I try to finish up and get there as close to 10 AM as possible so I can snatch the comics up while they’re still fresh.  Shout out to my guys there (and Charlie for always holding my Hellboy and B.P.R.D.)!  Tomorrow I’ll be picking up both issues of Bruce Wayne: The Road Home, Detective Comics #870, Green Arrow #5,  Justice League: Generation Lost #12, Time Masters: Vanishing Point#4, Wonder Woman #604, and Zatanna#6.  Still on the fence about Superman#704, since it is an interlude between Grounded.  Speaking of the Man Of Steel, all you fanboys and girls(especially those who loved Gaiman’s Sandman, as well) will be pleased to know that Morpheus’s spunky goth sister Death shows up in Action Comics#894.

Dark Horse And Toshiba Present New Digital Hellboy Comics Exclusively For USA TODAY

It’s time for all of us who miss Mignola on full Hellboy duty to rejoice.  This week  a five story series of USA TODAmignola 150x150 Dark Horse And Toshiba Present New Digital Hellboy Comics Exclusively For USA TODAY Y-exclusive online comics  presented by Dark Horse and  Toshiba, kicks off.   The DH:HD program we heard about at the NYCC starts with Hellboy: The Whittier Legacy.  Mike Mignola talked to USA TODAY about how he didn’t realize how much he missed having full responsibility of the character.  The Hellboy creator talked about the balance of keeping the character accessible to a whole new audience, while still giving diehard fans a story they would really appreciate.  I kind of find this akin to when Bob Kane moved to national syndication with his dailies from 1943 to 1946.  Mignola goes on to mention how his love of H.P. Lovecraft has always played a role in shaping his comic’s world (hmm…ya think?), but this new project will be a direct tribute to the legendary horror scribe.  In other news, not without it’s own forboding tinge, Mignola explained to USA TODAY that, ”In the next year, we’re going to do some really exciting things. Hellboy is going to be able to step away from the baggage he’s been carrying around for all these years. It’s a pretty big ending”, also noting “We’re going to blow stuff up that we won’t be able or willing to fix. We’re going to change everything.”  Wow.  By all means, waste no more time!  Check out the link below for the article and to start reading!

See You At The 2010 NY Comic Con!! Here’s some tips.

NYCCromitasr1 See You At The 2010 NY Comic Con!! Heres some tips.

With only a few days away, we all better be getting our proverbial houses in order.  Gather up all the comics and memorabilia you want signed.  Print out a personalized show schedule and map out your experience so the event doesn’t overstimulate your mind to the point of forgetting what it is you wanted to see and accomplish in the first place.  There will be a program available at the door, but it helps to be prepared because it is very easy to get side-tracked by all the visual candy.  Before you know it you realize you’ve missed a few things after the fact.  Bringing rubberbands for all the posters and prints is a must.  Being that a lot of artists will gladly do a sketch for you, especially when you’re buying something, having an extra pencil and sharpie with you is a great idea.  These guys (artists) are doodling all day, and there’s only so much ink in a pen/marker.  God forbid they go dry with a line waiting for them, you’ll be saving yourself and you won’t miss out on such a personalized collector’s item.  Remember:  Try to have whatever you want signed out and ready to keep everything moving smoothly.  Traffic jams suck and, even though they are mostly there for you, all the guests have long days ahead of them.

Be sure to check out all of the tables for exclusives (These are limited edish items you will find only here).  Also, be smart, bring your fill-in list and check out all the comic vendors.  They have back issues for as cheap as a dollar or less, and trades and graphic novels for half off (give or take).  This is a great way to cement the gaps in the runs of your collection while saving yourself a pretty penny at the same time.  The same goes for figures, statues and clothing.  Your back will be the only one complaining.  Believe me, I’ve gotten overzealous and learned the hard way. There were times I’ve felt the straps of an over encumbered knapsack digging into my shoulders days after I took it off. (Small price to pay for all the goodies you’ll bring home)

Be prepared to either purchase a ticket online or at the NYCC for a celebrity’s autograph, and be waiting early  to get a ticket into certain events, screenings, or panels.  Some have a limited admittance and are first come first served.  Don’t miss out!  Don’t worry though…most panels and such will run each day.  If you are there for the long haul, and miss it the first time, plan on clearing some time in the latter days to get to whatever room it is in before the line gets too long.   Don’t forget to support indie artists if you have any extra cash.  They paid a lot to get a table and will most assuredly appreciate it (plus, think of how much that stuff will be worth once they’ve made it!).

Telling you to bring a fully charged camera might be moot, since everyone has got crazy-futuristic multitasking phones, but none the less…most artists would be happy to get in a shot with you.

So in closing, have a blast, meet as many people as you can, find that rare comic you’ve been looking for, and come away with some great stories.  As long as you’ve worn comfortable shoes, you’ll be golden.  Don’t stress out.  Enjoy it.  (I’m partly talking to myself here).  And, lastly, be sure to either have some cash set aside for food and drink, or smuggle some in (it can be pretty expensive at any big event).

We will be trying to cover it as much as we can during the event, but whatever you don’t see up on the site during the weekend, we will be sure to get up after we are home and rested.

DC Comics List For Wedneday 10/06/10 (NYCC Week!!!)

The week is finally upon us!  Come friday the geeky madness and splendor of the New York Comic Con goes into full swing at the Jacob Javits Center!  We hope to see all of you there.  This thing looks to be the best yet.  There will be plenty of panels and screenings to immerse yourself in, all the artists, writers and creators you could possibly ever want to meet, and endless scantily clad girls in super heroine costumes (or guys if that’s your thing)!  Oh yeah, I almost forgot BRUCE CAMPBELL!!  Better buckle down and get started on some last minute comic reading so you’re in the know on the latest storylines, and don’t sound like a bumbling idiot trying to talk through troves of nerds and the insuing nerdage they bathe in.  Or, if you’re not going and you just need a respite from your work week.  After all, tomorrow ist Mittwoch (that’s wednesday in German…who said we’re not worldly here at FHTI?), the highlight of a geek’s week.  All of those who will be at the Con, be sure to check out my good pal and cowriter David V. Mammina‘s table.  You can find him on the show exclusives list and locate his table number in the program(be aware that they sometimes change).  He will be displaying and selling his books, doing free signings, and have concept art available(for a small donation).  If you see me through all the mayhem, I would be glad to sign his book Paltronis.  I did the illustrations.  Have a great one boys and girls!!

As always, your weekly DC comic list.  Looks like we’ll start off September light on the wallet.

My definite picks for this week?  Red Hood#4 and Brightest Day#9.  And on the Dark horse tip; be sure to get your fix in the lapses between Hellboy and B.P.R.D., by continuing to follow Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden’s creation Baltimore: The Plague Ships.  It  features the fantastic art of Ben Stenbeck.  Also, make sure to pick up the third and final issue of Hellboy: The Storm.  This long awaited follow up to the arc Mignola and Fegredo started with Darkness Calls and The Wild Hunt will conclude with another 3 issue series entitled The Fury.
