DC Comic List For Wednesday 05/18/11 And A Little Recap

After a month of waiting, my comics finally arrived in the mail (of course the downside is that I did have to buy them twice).  <Cue enormous sigh of relief>.  I have a few things to say before I give you the list.  My first thought regGLC 200x300 DC Comic List For Wednesday 05/18/11 And A Little Recapards the endings of Brightest Day and Justice League: Generation Lost.  Both series were two of my favorites in recent years.  Although they did drag on a little, they both remained full of action and housed many twists and turns.  I favored the ending of Brightest Day more than JL:GL simply because I felt, in a way,  the latter merely went back to square one.  Without giving anything away, DC’s reveal of the White Light’s avatar in BD was a move that definitely had a lot of fanboys drooling (although he did take to his new job a little too easily all new developments considered).  The one drawback of both series was that in the end they pretty much served to introduce another run.  Is it just me, or is it that every time a book draws to a close there is a certain quotient of financial relief?  Especially this summer after War Of The Green Lanterns and the huge upcoming Flashpoint crossover (and the many subsequent piggybacking  miniseries) we could use the  extra girth in our back pocket.  It just wouldn’t be DC’s style though, would it?  Sure they Draw The Line At $2.99, but how much does it help when every time one series comes to a close two more pop up?  Please don’t misunderstand me, newcomers; I am a DC all the way, but in the last few years I have seen a lot of comrades fall to the newly white, cartoon-gloved hand of Marvel or the abyssmal void that is giving up your collecting hat all together simply because these huge DC  Universe changing events seem never ending (or at least grow closer and closer together).  I hope this doesn’t blow my shot at one day writing for my favorite company!  Feel free to vent your thoughts in this article’s comment section.

To finish off some of my opinions on a few of the recent comics I’ve read (before dropping today’s list) i will do a quick recap…

Action Comics #900 : Great artists and writers for the anniversary issue, but the Doomsday arc left me underwhelmed.  There was, however, a crazy reveal between the godly Luthor and the Man Of Steel!

Batgirl :…has been spunky (don’t judge me) and fun as usual.  Let’s see if  it can keep it up.

Batman #708 & 709 : Along with the recent issues of Red Robin and Gotham City Sirens, Azrael (serving as pawn to Ra’s Al Ghul) put Dick, Tim and Selina on a holy trial with Gotham’s very fate hanging in the balanceIt wasn’t bad, but I might just be growing weary of  St.Dumas’s avatar.

Batman Beyond #5 : This issue brings back a dangerous old foe from Bruce Timm‘s television series!  Good stuff!

Batman: Detective Comics :  The last few issues have been really good…pick it up.

Batman & Robin #22 : I thought the story was interesting up until the finale.  The villain’s reasons weren’t bad, but i don’t recall any major explanation of his appearance or how he got his weapons.  Maybe it just didn’t hold my intrest enough to devote 100% of my attention.  The art was good, but i guess I found everything else a bit covuluted and “meh”.  Sorry.

Batman Incorporated : I don’t really understand why they are bringing back memories of the old Batwoman that shared the same name as the new one.  I assumed the red headed, Montoya loving vixen who surfaced in 52 was a modern revamping of the character.  DC, you never cease to confuse me with some of your choices.  Maybe it will play out good in the end; I’ve definitely put my foot in my mouth before,  but what are comic fans if not overzealous overreactors?

Birds Of Prey: This has been good.  Fin

The Flash: This run (and recent lead up to Flashpoint) has been great, in my opinion; especially issue #11 with the creepy child witness reveal.  Loved it!  Great job, Johns, you’re on fire!

Gotham City Sirens : The storyline with Harley gunning for the Joker truly was awesome…too bad she lost her nerve at the last second as always.  Bwa bwa bwaaaaaaaaa.  Now can we end this series?

Green Arrow : It’s been good with Ollie rediscovering his purpose and beginning to gain back his confidence, but is getting slightly repetitive in that forrest.

Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, and Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors : What can I say about this?  War Of The Green Lanterns is probably the thing I’m most excited to read lately.  Soooooo effin good!  Johns better never let go of GL.  I hope that when he dies a Black Lantern ring finds him, he resurrects, and continues the saga until Nekron has his way and the world is consumed by darkness.  A little overboard?  If you haven’t already, pick it up and be the judge!

The Outsiders :…is alright.  What is Giffen the reincarnation of Kirby?

Red Robin : Good as usual.

Secret Six : Seems to have gone off the deep end right into hell…literally.

Superman #710 : I liked this one.  A young Bruce and Clark work well together while keeping the personalities of their future alter egos in tact.

Wonder Woman : Unsure where they are taking this.  I thought i had some sort of grasp a few issues back, but i lost my grip and fell from Mount Olympus.  Don’t know if this could keep my curiosty much longer.

Hellboy, B.P.R.D., Witch Hunter, and Baltimore: They’ve all been amazing as usual.  These HB one-shots have been a great way to bide time until the end of the epic Mignola/Fegredo arc beginning next month; Richard Corben never disappoints and Kevin Nowlan contributed in one of the strangest tales yet.  Nowlan‘s art is second to none (and he not only drew, but colored and lettered in Buster Oakley Gets His Wish).  The guy’s a powerhouse.  Sadly we said goodbye to Guy Davis in the last installment of B.P.R.D..  I don’t know how i can go on without him, he is one of my favorite artists out there today.  At least I got a manic fan letter in the first issue of his last run!

Ok, now it’s about  time for the weekly list, wouldn’t you say?

Hey, Folks!  One of the reasons I’ve been so behind on the Wednesday comic list and reviews is because I’ve been waiting for a month for a comic shipment that got lost in the mail.  The Florida USPS is clueless about it and take no resposibility.  Sadly I put tracking on it (which ended in the Opa Locka processing plant not too far north from me) and neglected to get insurance.   Furthermore, and more distressing, that particular place deals with all the priority mail and is known for being the blackhole for parcels.  Woe is me.  I really hope I receive my last two weeks worth of books soon so I can get some words up for you.  This is the drawback (horrors really) of living nowhere near a comic shop.  Well, at any rate…here are today’s books and my picks!

I’m going to be picking up (getting mailed to me, rather…hopefully) Batgirl #21, Batman Incorporated #6, Batman: Arkham City #1, Birds Of Prey #12, The Flash #12, Flashpoint # 1, Red Robin # 23,  and Superman # 711.

dc logo2 150x150 DC Comic List For Wednesday 11/17/10

It’s a big Bat-week!  As you all know, Bruce has returned from the timestream and defeated death (and the Omega sanction).  Now he is back in Gotham with big plans.  He’s already made an announcement that might change the game in the superhero community in a big way: Batman Incorporated.  I have my qualms with the implications that his very public decision will have on his friends, and the battle plan.  For instance, in the last issue of Red Robin, Tim broke Lynx out of police custody uncertain whether she is indeed an undercover Hong Kong police officer, or just a ruthless gang leader.  At the end, it was implied he was using something other than his head–you pick the organ.  Then, after he let’s her go, Bruce appears out of the shadows and makes an allusion to his recurring Catwoman situation/relationship over the years.  Ok…wouldn’t Bruce be concerned about his partner, or any member of his team for that matter, being seen doing something so blatantly illegal when he just made it known that he funds these people?  Can we say accessory?  Nope; instead he makes light of the situation.  I’ll admit, I’m not so sure I’m thrilled with the direction it’s headed.  I will miss the loner; the dark era of Batman.  But, if the last generation lived through the transition from the silver to the modern age, at least we can say we lived, collected, and read through the new age (the post-modern age?).  It will be nice to see Batman getting the power he deserves though, and Bruce being in the hot spotlight will add tension and offer new conflicts ripe for story possibilities.  As always time will tell.  We will just have to hold onto the pages white-knuckled.  Happy reading!  Remember to apologize to your starving wallet.  Let me know what you’re reading.

Worldwide Batman Live Arena Tour On The Way

DC is upping the ante.  SHH has announced an exciting new venue for the Batman franchise.  For the first time, the Caped Crusader and company burst onto the international live-action theater scene with acting, stunts, pyrotechnics, acrobatics, and illusions.  Premiering in the UK in Summer 2011, the show will cross the pond to thrill US audiences the following year (but not before a Euro tour).  If it’s not just a big budget version of the Six Flag’s stunt show, it might be enough for me to scrap my moving fund and buy a plane ticket to Europe.  I just hope it doesn’t serve to further play out one of my favorite characters.   Tickets go on sale in three days.  Below is the show’s promo picture.

{Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP), DC Entertainment and Nick Grace of Water Lane Productions Ltd (WLP) announced today that Batman Live  – a unique action-packed live show – will tour arenas for the first time ever across the UK and Europe, beginning in summer 2011 and arriving in North America by summer 2012.

Opening in Manchester on 20th July 2011 and visiting Newcastle, Glasgow, Sheffield, Birmingham, London, Liverpool, Nottingham, Dublin and Belfast, tickets for Batman Live go on sale on Friday, November 12, 2010. The story will take place in several settings from the famed DC Comics stories, including Gotham City, Wayne Manor, the Batcave and Arkham Asylum.

“With the touring ‘Batman Live’ show, we’re bringing Batman’s adventures to live audiences for the very first time,” said Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer, DC Entertainment. “The idea that we’re doing it with a production team this talented and with this much passion is thrilling.”

“When a character has as wide an audience and as rich a history as Batman, it’s truly exciting to see him introduced into an all-new storytelling medium,” says Jim Lee, Co-Publisher, DC Comics. “‘Batman Live’ will bring a completely new experience to fans of the character – it’s great to be able to give them something they haven’t seen before.”

Drastic Change In The World Of Batman And Bruce Wayne!

I wouldn’t read this if you have any interest of being surprised at the end of Batman And Robin #16.  As most of you know, there are two big things afoot in Batman’s world: Bruce Wayne is back from the timestream, and Grant Morrison has finished his run on B&R.  But, would it really be like the Scottish scribe not to shake things up before his departure?  Yesterday, he did just that.  Upon the issue’s finale, Gotham’s famed billionaire playboy admitted that it’s all been a ruse; he has, in fact, been funding Batman’s crusade virtually from the start.  As if that’s not enough, he announced that he now has plans to franchise the Superhero persona and use it in the worldwide fight against crime by taking it global.  Cue the sky filling up with bat-signals, and Dick, Tim, Damian and Alfred looking pleased as punch behind him.

Ok…I get it that you’re excited to be back and you see the world, and the place your mission has in it,  in a whole different light.  I understand that you don’t want to take your family–whom you previously saw as your personal soldiers–for granted anymore, and you want to include everyone close to you in this new vision, but isn’t this a little much?  It is somewhat of a bi-polar move, in my opinion.  You just got back from a brain scrambling odyssey, in which you barely had but a scant clue of who you were and where you were heading, and now it is suddenly all clear to you?  Not to mention, before that your personal world (and sanity) was ripped to shreds by The Black Glove–lest we forget Darkseid doing the same to the world with his anti-life equation, shortly afterwards.  I think you can afford to dial it back a notch.  In fact, it would do you well to stop and assess for a moment before making such a monumentous, game-changing decision.  Here’s why…

Not only does outing himself put everyone he’s close to in danger, but it also does so to his countless employees by turning Wayne Enterprises into a target worldwide.   Personal ties aside, this also makes him “ainc Drastic Change In The World Of Batman And Bruce Wayne!ccomplice” to an outlaw.  Wouldn’t auditors and investigators naturally dig deeper now, to fine-tooth comb every little paper trail?   God forbid one of his global Bat-Men go rogue, or the authorities want to pull up the root and take the original one down, this would all fall on Bruce.  It seems like  too much responsibility for someone looking to expand and concentrate on their battle plan (especially someone who just got their identity and mental state back).  Having to deal head-on with the publicity of it all seems like somewhat of  a farce, and in my mind can only hamper his mission.  Strange enough, because of all this, I can’t help but seeing Bruce as a little selfish.  What makes the outcome of this so different from what Vicki Vale would have accomplished with her article?  I wonder where Alfred’s sage fatherly advice is during all of this.

Now, we all new BATMAN, INC. was coming, but I was under the assumption that it would be yet another secret venture.  I almost liked the idea of the character coming off more otherwordly and mythical by making it seem like he can be fighting crime all over the globe at one time.  At this point, it all feels a little too Tony Stark to me.  In a way this is the exact antithesis of what made Batman what and who he was.  It could serve to take away the romance that made the character so appealing.  No more lone misfit brooding in the shadows. Also, this sort of trivializes any future “big reveal” Bruce would have made in unmasking his identity to Gordon. Now it would be less shocking, and more expected…kind of a shame.

In my opinion, Batman And Robin was Morrison’s saving grace.  He really hit one out of the park with that title.  It had everything: action, insane new villains, intrigue, mystery, and some great art.  The three issues that preceeded the most recent were some of the best comics I’ve read in a long while.  That says a lot, as disillusioned as I am.  Looking back, Dr. Hurt is nothing compared to the change this will likely have on not only the Bat-family, but the entire DCU.  Some of you might recall that I was against R.I.P. for a long time.  I have been known to eat my words down the line, but this is a lot to digest.  Empathy for readers, present and future, fueled most of my past gripes with Morrison.  I thought to myself, “If I was a child, would I be able to pick this up, understand what was going on, and get into Batman?”…”Would my shocked parents allow me to continue reading after getting a glimpse of the subject matter?”…”Can an adult reader get into this story if they haven’t picked up the last few issues?”.  My answer to all three were “No”.  Heck, I’d probably be making some of the same creative choices that Grant makes, given the chance, but we also have to take into account that this character will, hopefully, be around a lot longer than us and has been an idol to children for the last seventy years, as well.  That being said, on the other hand, superheroes are the new mythology, and we’re all very aware that the ancients didn’t care about sparing anybody’s feelings.

So, what do I know, then?  I do know this…you do what best fits a character.  Is this the next natural step in Batman’s growth and development, or are there a few rungs missing in the ladder?  As skeptical as I can be, I am excited to pick up BATMAN, INC. to find out!  The fact that the artistry looks awesome doesn’t hurt either.  Remember, it is still early on in this new chapter.  I am reacting to not only the raw initial shock, but also recalling feelings and discussions had during the entirety of Grant Morrison’s “epic” run.  If nothing else, I’m sure this is exactly what the writer wanted–to spark furious debate and thought.

Rant accomplished…let me know where you stand.

Bruce Wayne Is Back! (Kinda-Spoiler Alert)

Have you gotten a chance to hit your comic shop today?  If you’ve read the most recent Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne, you’d see that he’s resurfaced with ominous implications.  In DC’s normal style(R.I.P., Final Crisis), they are running two titles (involving the same character) slightly out of alignment/continuity.  Because of that, in this case, you know ahead of time that all will be well.  The other read of which I speak is a group of one-shots spanning this month (and all related books) called Bruce Wayne: The Road Home.  In this series he stealthily shadows all his old allies to see how they’ve progressed (or the opposite) in his absence, and how they will be able to play into his new worldwide battle plan.  He starts up a new ‘White Casebook”, that works as a narrative, to carefully catalog all the field data he is collecting.  As of now, Tim (Red Robin) is his confidant in this most present venture.  It is definitely fitting; after all, he was the biggest advocate of Bruce’s proof-of-life.   That does not leave him out of Bruce’s watchful eye and research, however.   Whereas I have found a good deal of “Return” convoluted and confusing, I think “Road Home” gains from it’s simplicity.  I do like it, but I am by no means claiming it’s great yet, because I would like to see how it pans out after the dust settles.  Here’s a glimpse of Bruce unveiling himself at the end of the Batman and Robin one-shot in the new miniseries.
