The Comic World is Buzzing about The New 52
Now that there is a mere month left of the summer blockbuster comic event FLASHPOINT, and we grow that much closer to the groundbreaking NEWniverse (I should coin that), I’ve grown more comfortable with the change and would like to briefly share some of my thoughts. As you know, the DC relaunch kicks off at the end of August with Justice League #1 written by superstar comic scribe Geoff Johns (Green Lantern) and amazing artist and DC co-publisher Jim Lee (Batman:Hush). If you frequent our site or picked up the free “DC COMICS: The New 52″ preview book at your local shop, you have already seen the six page sneak preview of JL #1. The events take place five years before present day as a threat unfolds that will require the worlds greatest (but disparate) heroes to band together. The part I most appreciated was at the end when Hal Jordan remarked with surprise to Batman “You’re Real?”, which lends the Caped Crusader the dark myth status that fits his character so well. How can I not be excited with such a phenomenal creative duo helming the most powerful superhero team of all time?
Some of you might notice the lack of Martian Manhunter in the promo pictures. He has been replaced by Cyborg, who plays an integral part in FLASHPOINT. But fear not, friends, J’onn J’onzz will be a driving force in STORMWATCH, a “dangerous super human organization whose existence is kept secret from the world”. This comic appears to be the bridge between DC and it’s dead subsidiary company WILDSTORM for it’s defunct characters Apollo and Midnighter.
Other promising team books to look out for are Justice League International, Green Lantern Corps, GL: New Guardians, Red Lanterns, Justice League Dark, Suicide Squad, Teen Titans, Legion Lost, Legion Of Super-Heroes, Birds Of Prey and Batman And Robin.
Books to look out for are Action Comics #1 (which is said to be the cornerstone of the new DCU), Aquaman (also written by Geoff Johns, and featuring a new threat of creatures called The Trench…if anyone can make “fishboy” an exciting/worthwhile read it’s this guy), almost all the Bat-books (Nightwing’s in his tight spandex again, Batwoman looks dark and eerie, Catwoman’s written by Judd Winick, and, wait for it…Barbara Gordon is back under the Batgirl cowl!), Red Hood And The Outlaws (I called an Arsenal and Red Hood team-up book years ago. Wish I could take credit), Swamp Thing (Alec Holland is back as our green buddy, plus Snyder and Paquette are great) and All-Star Western (A Jonah Hex team-up with Amadeus Arkham in a 19th century Gotham is forcing my hand to buy this book). How was that for a run-on sentence?
Some things I don’t dig: Red Robin’s new costume; did he get it cheap on the reservation? Hey, Tim, Black Condor wants his outfit back and he’s pissed you left it in the warm wash with your reds. His outfit was one of the cooler ones. Why do they always break what’s fixed? (Oh, no he didn’t!).
Another is the survival of Batman Incorporated from one ‘verse to another. Unless it’s going to be a shadowy organization that only the supers know about, leave it out. The whole public/Tony Stark sort of thing…nope.
Is Batwing really necessary?
And, for all you Ted Kordians out there, looks like Jaime still has the scarab…sorry.
Some things I do dig: Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad and Sinestro as a Green Lantern again (now I understand why the Red Lanterns will be the main bad guys in the GL Animated Series…at least in the beginning).
Love it or hate it, you have to admit that this is one of the most talked about comic events in recent decades. In my personal opinion it at least registers as the most bold and exciting move either of the industries “Big 2″ have made in the 21st century. Hopefully they don’t drop the ball. Well, that’s my piece for now. Hope it piqued the interest of some casual readers and Marvel fans. Sorry for my long hiatus. I hope to be back for good to my throne as DC guy soon. Until next time.

P.S. I should have added the fact that I’ll probably be buying almost every book to my list of things I don’t dig.
DC Universe: The New 52 Video
DC Comic s is going out of their way to bring something new and fresh to the comic book industry. I for one am glad. I believe it has become hard for many collectors to keep up with comics in general. With the DC relaunch it gives old and new readers alike a fresh start. Some people might feel that it’s unnecessary. But in the great scheme of things it couldn’t be any better. As an old collector, you feel a bit uneasy about the change. But you can always go back and read your old books.
DC Comics: Jim Lee Justice League Relaunch Pic
I have to tell the truth. This picture right here is the main reason that I will be buying DC Comics hardcore starting in August. Just when you had another favorite artist, your first favorite comes and does something like this. If this doesn’t make people interested in comics again nothing will. And as for the uniforms. I hope this new Superman will be the basis for the new film. It really puts “Man of Steel” into perspective. Some would say he’s Superman. He doesn’t need armor. No he sure doesn’t. But that outfit is, well………SUPER!!! They all look great.
DC Comics Return To 1: Geoff Johns and Jim Lee Lead The Way
Recently, that is yesterday DC comics announced that 52 titles will start over from #1. This starts ion August 31. The first title to begin this massive restart will be Justice League with the creative team of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee.
It seems that the two DC powerhouses are going to show the comic industry how to do it right. Both Johns and Lee hold executive positions at DC Entertainment. Now they will continue the jobs that made them so famous. Personally this title will be something big. Apparently the Flashpoint titles and storyline will pave the way for this ultimate end of the entire Crisis storyline that started in the 80′s. Maybe. But if you ever thought about reading comics or have fallen off, (like myself). This August is REALLY the best time to get into DC Comics. And you could always pick up the trade paperback of Flashpoint later. Here is an excerpt from various spots that were able to speak with the big wigs at DC.
Also if look closely at this JLA picture by Jim Lee, you will see that everyone with a collar has the “V” neck. Ryan Reynolds also has the same collar in the up coming Green Lantern film. Any connection!?!?!? Who knows!?!?!
DCU Source Blog: Press Release (via Screenrant)
“On Wednesday, August 31st, DC Comics will launch a historic renumbering of the entire DC Universe line of comic books with 52 first issues, including the release of Justice League by New York Times bestselling writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and bestselling artist and DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee. The publication of Justice League issue 1 will launch day-and-date digital publishing for all these ongoing titles, making DC Comics the first of the two major American publishers to release all of its superhero comic book titles digitally the same day as in print.
“DC Comics will only publish two comic books on August 31st: the final issue of this summer’s comic book mini-series Flashpoint and the first issue of Justice League by Johns and Lee, two of the most distinguished and popular contemporary comic book creators, who will be collaborating for the first time. Together they will offer a contemporary take on the origin of the comic book industry’s premier superhero team.”
DCE Senior Vice President of Sales Bob Wayne: (via Screenrant)
“[T]he new #1s will introduce readers to a more modern, diverse DC Universe, with some character variations in appearance, origin and age. All stories will be grounded in each character’s legend – but will relate to real world situations, interactions, tragedy and triumph.
“We think our current fans will be excited by this evolution, and that it will make jumping into the story extremely accessible to first-time readers – giving them a chance to discover DC’s characters and stories.
“We have taken great care in maintaining continuity where most important, but fans will see a new approach to our storytelling.
“Some of the characters will have new origins, while others will undergo minor changes. Our characters are always being updated; however, this is the first time all of our characters will be presented in a new way all at once.
“Dan DiDio, Bob Harras and Eddie Berganza have been working diligently to pull together some of the best creative teams in the industry. Over 50 new costumes will debut in September, many updated and designed by artist Jim Lee, ensuring that the updated images appeal to the current generation of readers.”
Worldwide Batman Live Arena Tour On The Way
DC is upping the ante. SHH has announced an exciting new venue for the Batman franchise. For the first time, the Caped Crusader and company burst onto the international live-action theater scene with acting, stunts, pyrotechnics, acrobatics, and illusions. Premiering in the UK in Summer 2011, the show will cross the pond to thrill US audiences the following year (but not before a Euro tour). If it’s not just a big budget version of the Six Flag’s stunt show, it might be enough for me to scrap my moving fund and buy a plane ticket to Europe. I just hope it doesn’t serve to further play out one of my favorite characters. Tickets go on sale in three days. Below is the show’s promo picture.
{Warner Bros.
